BridesMen and Men Of Honour... Who says Bridesmaids Have To Be Women?

Writer's picture: Danielle WinshipDanielle Winship

For some of you, the rules are out the window, and your best friends—whether they wear heels or loafers—male bridesmaids (or bridesmen) are being asked to stand by your side and I am #hereforit.

Modern weddings are giving tradition a backseat to make way for creativity, individuality, and inclusivity and I couldn't be happier!

If you’ve got a male bridesmaid in your squad, you might be wondering how to make sure he feels just as celebrated as everyone else.

Spoiler alert: It’s easier than you think!

Here’s how to include your male bridesmaid, bridesman or man of honour in a way that’s fun, thoughtful, and totally stress-free:

1. Dress Them to Impress

Unless they are gender / dress fluid, you're going to have to rethink the one-size-fits-all mindset when it comes to bridal party attire. If your bridesmaids are in dresses, consider a sharp suit or blazer for your male bridesmaid that coordinates with the color scheme. Try matching his tie, pocket square, or socks to the bridesmaids’ dresses. Bonus points for adding a fun accessory, like a lapel pin or custom cufflinks that tie everything together.

Pro Tip: If he is comfortable with the idea, let him try on a few options with (or without) the bridesmaids there so that he can be part of the decision-making too. Men appreciate the compliments and reassurance just as much as women do. A confident bridesman is a happy bridesman!

2. Nail the Hen Party Vibes

Your hen party doesn’t have to be all tiaras and mani-pedi's (although no judgment if it is!). Maybe add a few activities that everyone can enjoy, like:

  • A mixology class where everyone learns to shake up signature cocktails

  • An outdoor adventure like zip-lining or paddleboarding

This way, everyone—male or female—feels part of the fun. Just make sure to include plenty of laughs and group photos.

3. Let Them Shine in Photos

Your bridesmen deserve to look and feel like they belong in the group shots. Work with your photographer to plan poses that don’t leave him feeling awkward or out of place. A mix of candid and posed shots can work wonders.

4. Give Them a Role to Remember

Want your bridesman to shine? Give him a standout role! Whether it’s delivering an epic toast, doubling up as a flower-man for the ceremony, MCing key moments of the day or organizing a surprise for the bride, he’ll feel appreciated and integral to the day - as he should.

5.  Celebrate the Bond

If you have decided to gift your bridesmaid squad something meaningful, don’t forget the guys. Personalised flasks, engraved watches, or even a quirky pair of socks that scream “them” can do the trick. Add a heartfelt note that says something like, “Thank you for always being in my corner” to make it extra special.

6.  Include Him in the Prep

The getting-ready part of the day can be a blast! If he’s comfortable, have him join you all during hair and makeup fun, or set up a separate chill zone for him to hang out while everyone’s prepping. Make sure to share a toast, swap some laughs, and enjoy the moment together before the ceremony. If he means that much to you, you'll want him nearby.

7. Break the Ice

If your bridesmaids don’t know your male bridesmaid well, plan a pre-wedding meet-up. A casual brunch or group activity like quiz night can help everyone bond before the big day, ensuring there’s no awkwardness when it’s time to walk down the aisle.

Final Thoughts...

Male bridesmaids aren’t just part of the trend—they’re part of your story. By focusing on their personality, style, and role, you can make sure they feel just as celebrated as anyone else in your bridal party.

Your wedding is about the people who mean the most to you, so let your circle shine!
